Today (July 28, 2022), small mountain communities in Kentucky and Virginia are devastated by severe flooding after severe thunderstorms. According to Fox 56 meteorologist Chris Johnson, 10 to 12 inches of rain fell on the steep terrain in nine hours. As the streams rose, they filled narrow valleys with rushing water. First responders rescued dozens of people from floodwaters. But hundreds of others remained trapped during the day. Since Friday (July 29, 2022), authorities have reported that 16 people from the same family, including four young children, have died. A river gauge along the North Fork of the Kentucky River at Whitesburg measured a water level of 20 feet in 10 hours. A weather station in Whitesburg recorded a 21-foot high around 1 p.m., breaking the old record of 14.7 feet set in 1957. Hurricane tracker and photographer Billy Bowling was at the scene of the flooding Thursday afternoon. Bowling is a native of Virginia and has seen many floods in this Appalachian region. Bowling described the flooding in Whitesburg:
They said the water was wider and deeper than any event they had seen before. Bowling explained the situation.
Water engulfed 80% of buildings in Whitesburg (Population 2, 215). Houses along the river were submerged up to the roof tops, and the high school was completely under water up to the roof. There was devastation on a scale I had never seen before in the region. Instead of a small town, it was a city completely shut off from the world.

Bowling has seen several water rescues involving people trapped in cars, with one car emerging after being submerged for several hours. Bowling said:

Severe thunderstorms developed across Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia on Wednesday night. This frontal system focused on moisture and altitude in the mountains. Deep tropical moisture enters from the south and is expelled from the atmosphere by the front. Once the storm is up, they are almost stationary.

The flooding in Kentucky follows a week of heavy rain across the country. A similar weather system dumped 12 to 14 inches of rain in Missouri, causing widespread damage and water rescues. St. Lewis measured a day's rainfall in a few hours. Thursday also saw flash flooding in Colorado, Arizona and Utah. And forecasters are calling for more flooding in the coming week.
Forecasters expect heavy rain to continue in Kentucky and far West Virginia on Friday and Saturday. The stubborn frontal system brings more opportunities for slower-moving storms, which could drop two to four inches of additional rain. The frontal system will last until early August, although forecasts do not know the exact location of the heavy rains.
Update: Record flooding in parts of Kentucky as 10 to 12 inches of rain fell. The Kentucky flood was one of the worst floods in the state's history.
